PRAVDA: Fall of the Chair

During this year’s Model United Nations (MUN), delegates from different countries came together to discuss global issues and find solutions that benefit all nations. One of the main committees in the MUN is the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This year this council focuses on discussing affordable and clean energy in the LEDC’s.

During a recent conference, something unexpected happened in an unmoderated caucus, where delegates from Costa Rica, Belgium, and Guatemala formed an alliance that led to a series of events that changed the course of the committee.

In committees, there are several procedures that delegates follow to address issues. Arguably the main one being the Speakers list, where delegates sign up to speak in a predetermined order.

During April 28th committee, while an unmoderated caucus was in play Costa Rica, Belgium, and Guatemala formed an alliance.

They discussed their opinions on how to address the issue tunneling about Nigeria for unknown reasons. Later, when the Speakers List resumed, Costa Rica proposed a vote to promote the delegates from Belgium and REPLACE THE CHAIR!? Out of nowhere.

The suggestion was passed with only one delegate, the Republic of Korea, opposing it.

Belgium became the new chair of the committee, and it soon became apparent that the country had not anticipated the responsibilities that came with the position. Belgium's behavior became erratic and immature. The country acted cocky and failed to follow the rules. It was clear that they were not ready for such a significant role.

As a result, the committee began to lose focus, and progress towards finding solutions to the issues at hand stalled.
