AL JAZEERA: From topic to topic. Wall to wall.

Yesterday six delegates from six different countries gathered in the same room to discuss a pressing issue, namely “Food Security & Sustainable Food Systems”. At the end of the caucuses, they came to vague conclusions and split into two leagues. Chad, Switzerland and Yemen were in the spotlight today.

By the end of the day, delegates from six countries divided themselves into teams as they couldn’t agree among themselves. Their views on a solution to the same problem are very different. “It is too early to talk about a coalition, but all indicates that we are moving in that direction!” - commented Switzerland after dividing into two work groups. Right now, they are working on two different resolutions connected with investment in GMO technology, overnutrition and water pollution.

Joined teams

Chad, Iran and Yemen joined together to write a resolution on the topic of inventory in GMOs. Although Iran and Yemen are now at war, they have teamed up to tackle food waste together. This decision was made only for people who starve to death during the food waste crisis.

When asked how the two groups would agree on which resolution to choose and whether it would be a simple choice, the delegate representing Chad replied simply and confidently: "I'm sure we won't be able to agree right away and there will be some debate, but in the end, we will be able to find some common ground where we can bring the two ideas together."

Many topics were raised yesterday, all relating in one way or another to food security and sustainable food systems such as the UN assistance to less developed countries, education, civil wars and malnutrition, technology and its role in fighting food security, overnutrition, climate change, water pollution and technologies.

All these issues were discussed and then dismissed or postponed; this type of attitude did not contribute to fast and coordinated work. During their opening speeches, many countries had their own ideas and opinions, but by the end of the day, you can see how influenced different countries are by succumbing to the tricks and ideas of others.

Influenced by the opinions of others

Sessions started with opening speeches, where all delegates highlighted their worries and thoughts on the topic. Chad promised that they would support any regulations concerning food security and sustainable food systems.

Cuba was very concerned about the fact that their country heavily relies on more developed countries, when it comes to getting food supplies. Switzerland supported the idea that more developed countries must help less developed. Iran and Kuwait raised their concerns about large water waste and its quality. Yemen hopes to reach agreements to establish a food crisis.

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

After all the above, it is safe to point out how quickly groups form and countries' opinions change under the influence of others. It is safe to say that they are now working as two blocks rather than teams, but eventually they will have to come to a consensus and present only one resolution. They have another session scheduled for Saturday, where they will meet again to discuss their resolutions.
